Carleton Martello Tower National Historic Site
VCDW was contracted by Parks Canada to provide conceptual and detailed exhibit design, fabrication, installation and project management services to create permanent exhibits in a new visitor centre located adjacent to a War of 1812 Martello tower structure in Saint John, New Brunswick.
We worked closely with a Parks Canada project team and participated in two stakeholder consultations for evaluation and feedback on the design concepts. To assist stakeholder participants in evaluating design options, we provided mounted visuals, a working model, and a 3-dimensional exhibit mockup. VCDW assisted with further development of interpretive themes, developed a customized tracking system for interpretive media, resources and work flow / task completion, provided spatial and graphic design, proposed, demonstrated and developed engaging and entertaining media including mechanical and digital interactives, two scale models (one with associated audio interactives), a graphic novel interpretation illustrating tower construction, and a full-scale replica section of the stone Martello tower wall. The exhibition won third place in the National Association for Interpretation Media Competition held in Portland, Oregon in 2008.
